When Meghan Markle worked on the TV show Suits in Vancouver, she was offered the opportunity to design a capsule collection for the Canadian department store, Reitmans. Meghan’s collection with Reitmans encompasses what she described as the tagline for her style, “aspirational girl next door.” It’s a collection that can go down in history now as part of her pre-Royal style.
In honor of Meghan Markle’s role as guest editor for British Vogue’s September 2019 issue, I am going back in time and taking a moment to appreciate some of her style moments that honors her taste and style before becoming a royal. Meghan’s pre-Royal style can best be defined as California chic with minimalist and structured pieces throughout. Her style as a Royal continues to reflect many of the themes here, but her pre-Royal “commoner” style is certainly worth noting.
Birdies is a San Francisco based shoe company that Meghan was spotted wearing a few times, including during her time as a cast member on Suits.
Everlane is a San Francisco based sustainability focused fashion company that Meghan loves: she has worn sweaters by them (above) as well as a tote that she was seen sporting in the early days of her romance with Harry.
Meghan’s go-to bag before her Royal days was a monogrammed Goyard bag. She would wear this bag on many different outings captured by the paparazzi. She would often be seen holding a yoga mat alongside it.
Meghan Markle has a close friendship with the British designer, Misha Nonoo; her friend that gave her entrance into the Soho House social scene. Nonoo designs minimalist pieces and is best known for her “boyfriend shirt” which Markle is seen wearing in one of her Instagram posts. It’s very possible that Nonoo is Archie’s Godmother!
Together in the coming months they will design a collection for Meghan’s patronage, Smart Works Charity, which will be a collaboration with British department store, Marks and Spencer. For each piece sold in the collection, a piece of clothing will be donated to the charity that supports unemployed women re-entering the work force.
Plaisirs De Birks (Jewelry)
Meghan’s taste in jewelry is unique, especially during her pre-Royal days. She did not shy away from pieces that are unusual or unconventional, especially with dainty yet ultra-modern earrings. Her jewelry style is definitely minimalist, the smaller pieces the better. In the case for her Catbird rings, she wore the thinnest possible rings and sometimes stacked them. She was also seen wearing a small fox pendant a number of times during her Suits days.
The Herve Leger gown here is a perfect example of Meghan’s Hollywood style: many of her trips down the red carpet accentuated her figure with a theme of understated and timeless glamour.
